BREAKING: AC Milan close Mattia Caldara transfer to Atalanta

After 18 months and zero league appearances, AC Milan defender Mattia Caldara leaves the Rossoneri to join Atalanta.

Mattia Caldara is about to return at Atalanta. Sky Sports journalists Gianluca Di Marzio confirms that AC Milan and Atlanta have reached an agreement fro the transfer of the 25-year-old centre back to Bergamo.

The Wednesday meeting between the two clubs was decisive, as was the visit of agent Giuseppe Riso at Casa Milan a little while ago. The parties are about to close the last details and the transfer should be announced shortly.

Mattia Caldara will join Atalanta on loan for 18 months, until 30 June 2021. Atalanta should also obtain an option to sign the Italian defender on a permanent deal. The former Juventus defender arrived at San Siro in exchange of Leonardo Bonucci with both players valued at €35 million.

The centre back had already give his approval for this transfer. The AC Milan number 31 wants to play continuously and return to being a protagonist on the pitch. The best solution immediately appeared to be a loan back to Atalanta, where he will also be able to debut in the Champions League.

Contrary to initial reports, AC Milan have refused the chance to sign Simon Kjaer or Marco Sportiello from Atalanta on loan for the remaining of the season. Both players have failed to convince the Rossoneri management. Maldini and Boban seem oriented to make an last attempt for Barcelona’s Todibo.
