Fiorentina defeat exposes AC Milan’s big problem

AC Milan suffered their first league defeat against Fiorentina highlighting the squad’s big problem in defence.

Yesterday’s 4-3 defeat against Fiorentina was stunning. The result speaks for itself, scoring 3 goals and not getting a single point is obviously devastating and highlights that something is wrong with AC Milan’s defence.

In fact yesterday’s defeat is alarming precisely for this reason. In 13 league appearances so far the Rossoneri have conceded 15 goals. The situation is worse if we take into consideration the 7 goals conceded in Champions. History teaches us that almost every year the squad that concedes leas ends up winning the Scudetto.

Simon Kjaer emphasized this aspect after the match. “AC Milan can not concede 4 goals in one match. A squad that wants to win the title can not concede 4 goals“. Throughout the match Fiorentina did not create a lot of chances but they were opportunistic with the chances they got scoring 4 on 5 shots on goal.

AC Milan lack depth in defence. Key back-line players like Mike Maignan, Davide Calabria, Fikayo Tomori and Alessio Romagnoli were not available for the Fiorentina match. While the forwards were able to fund the back of the net, yesterday’s experimental back-four could not keep up the same pace.

Tatarusanu is obviously not on Maignan’s level but thankfully the French goalkeeper looks able to return on the pitch earlier than expected. Gabbia is not a real alternative to Tomori just like Ballo-Toure can’t replace Theo Hernandez. While Kalulu is a promising defender, AC Milan could definitely use a new signing to improve the department.
