AC Milan looking at 3 top players to replace Bilgia

Lucas Biglia

Lucas Biglia

Lucas Biglia is in his last year of contract with AC Milan and the Rossoneri are searching a replacement for the defensive midfielder.

It is only a matter of time but the adventure of Lucas Biglia at Milan can be considered already concluded. The only question-mark is whether the Argentine will leave on January or at the end of the season.

The midfielder, plagued by injuries, failed to offer what the club expected at the time of his purchase. Despite his age, AC Milan invested nearly €20 million to sign Biglia from Lazio in the summer of 2017.

The 33-year-old defensive midfielder has made 56 appearances with the Rossoneri but has lost his first-team spot since last year. Bakayoko started in front of the defence while this season, Ismael Bennacer is Giampaolo’s favorite for the job.

Bilgia’s contract with Milan expires in June 2020 and it will not be renewed. However, the former Lazio could say goodbye to Milan even earlier with a reported rich offer from Qatar on the horizon.

Soon the Rossoneri will be called to buy a new midfielder to challenge Bennacer for a staring role. So far, three are the names that Maldini and Boban are looking to replace Biglia starting with everyone’s favorite potential signings.

LUKA MODRIC | REAL MADRID

Just like in the case of Biglia, Modric’s departure from Real Madrid is a matter of time. The Croatian’s contract with Los Blancos expires next summer and the parties will not renew their current deal.

Ajax star Donny van de Beek is seen as the long-term replacement of Modric at Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid have booked the Netherlands international for next season but could anticipate his arrival.

After signing numerous youngsters this summer, Boban and Maldini are in search of authority players that can provide some much needed experience to such a young squad.

Luka Modric

“Modric is a big Milan fan, an extraordinary friend and player but there was never a real possibility to acquire him”, declared Boban at the end of the transfer window.

Boban will certainly make a new attempt to bring his friend at San Siro. A future transfer, at the right figures, doesn’t seem so impossible any more.

NEMANJA MATIC – MANCHESTER UNITED

Just like Modric, Matic is a player that AC Milan tried to sign this summer. Daily Mirror revealed that Milan had made an unsuccessful bid to sign the Manchester United midfielder.

The Serbian international is 31-year-old and like the rest of this pack he will be a free agent in 2020. Low game time under coach Solskjaer means that renewal is not an option.

Manchester United paid €45 million to sign Nemanja Matic from Chelsea in 2017 but will be forced to accept just a fraction of that fee in January in order to avoid losing him for free next summer.

Matic earns a high salary of 7 million euros per year but is willing to lower his wage if AC Milan offer him a long-term contract. Inter too are interested in his services.

SANDRO TONALI – BRESCIA

Another old transfer target of AC Milan, but much younger than the two other candidates, is Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The 19-year-old defensive midfielder took Italian football by storm last season being named Footballer of the Year in Serie B. This year is his first season in Serie A.

The Italian talent has never hidden his desire to join Milan where his idol Gennaro Gattuso made a name for himself. “Pirlo has inspired me but I’ve never seen another like him. My role model is Gattuso.

Sandro Tonali is more in line with Elliot’s policy of signing young and promising players that can become first-team regulars in a short time. His current price tag is €20-25 million but this figure could change depending on his performances this year.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali made 34 league appearances last season outclassing opposition players with far more experience. He found the back of the net on 3 occasions, provided 7 assists and guided Brescia to Serie A promotion. The deep-lying playmaker is being followed by a number of clubs but the opportunity to play a young squad favors AC Milan and could facilitate Maldini’s job.
