Two names lead race for AC Milan coaching job

This will be Stefano Pioli’s last season in charge of the club and AC Milan are already looking for his successor.

This season will be the last of Stefano Pioli as AC Milan. It is only early December but the Rossoneri find themselves out of the race in Serie A and at the bottom of their Champions League group and practically out. Europe in particular has been a total disappointment. However, the American owner of AC Milan cannot afford failure in Europe and this aspect especially will weight more on Stefano Pioli’s sealed fate.

Unless a sensational event takes place Stefano Pioli will keep his job until the end of the season. Not because of the management’s confidence in him but because there aren’t many convincing names currently available. Antonio Conte is not a realistic option due to his high salary and he as well wants to wait for a new club during the summer.

Instead, AC Milan are following with great interest Raffaele Palladino and Thiago Motta. Bother former players are doing an incredible job at their respective squads. Palladino was promoted to Monza head coach only last year. Monza were at the bottom of Serie A and destined for relegation. However, they ended the season in totally unexpected eleventh spot. Monza are swimming in similar waters this season.

Palladino rejected the advances of important clubs and renewed his contract with Monza until 2024 but his departure to a bigger club is just a matter of time. Similar story for Thiago Motta. The former Italy midfielder did a great job saving Spezia from relegation in his only season in change and eventually joined Bologna.

Motta again exceeded expectations finishing the first season with Bologna in ninth spot and are doing even better this time fighting for a place in European cups. Bologna are playing an attracting attacking football and Thiago Motta is credited with enhancing young players like Ferguson and Zirkzee. Thiago Motta is reportedly AC Milan’s first choice for the coaching job. There have already been exploratory talks between the parties for a summer move. Thiago Motta’s past life as an Inter player is not a problem either for AC Milan or the Italian coach.
