Leao’s father gives grim signal on AC Milan renewal

“My son is the best player in Serie A”, Antonio Leao speaks in an interview with Record on Rafael’s contract renewal with AC Milan.

The future of Rafael Leao remains shrouded in mystery. The 23-year-old left winger is having another high level season cementing his status as one of the best players in Serie A. At the same time, his contract with AC Milan expires in 2024 and important clubs have already began to circle around.

The recent words of Rafael’s father on his contract renewal don’t seem very encouraging. In an interview with Portuguese newspaper Record, Antonio Leao was asked on what is going on with AC Milan regarding his son’s renewal. “We’re working on it. Chelsea’s interest? We’ll take care of the everything until the 2024 deadline, without Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Rafael loves being in Italy. He has a predilection for Italians, the one the Portuguese don’t have for him. He won the best player award of last Serie A season not because he was handsome, but simply… because he is the best”, said Antonio Leao.

AC Milan are facing a very tough battle in convincing Rafael Leao to pen a new deal and timing is not in their favor. The management expected to make significant steps forward before the year was over but that has not been the case. The Portuguese left winger has traveled to Qatar to play in the World Cup and talks will resume only next year after the tournament is over.

Rafa has reportedly asked AC Milan to pay the nearly €20 million fine he owes to Sporting Lisbon in addition to a new contract of €7 million per season. The Rossoneri management is willing to meet his salary demands but they have no intention to contribute in a matter they have nothing to do with.
