Pellegatti: AC Milan make transfer promise to Leao

Journalist Carlo Pellegatti reveals the strategy AC Milan are using to convince Rafael Leao to extend his contract.

Rafael Leao was the absolute protagonist of the recent Derby della Madonnina that finished 3-2 in favor of AC Milan. The Portuguese winger scored two goals and provided on assist cementing his status as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player. However, the situation is not as bright off the pitch.

Rafael Leao’s contract expires in less the two years and renewal talks have been fruitless so far. His agent Jorge Mendes is asking at least €7 million per season. Currently, the Rossoneri’s highest earning player is Theo Hernandez with €4.5 million. Carlo Pellegatti reveals AC Milan’s strategy regarding the contract extension of Rafael Leao.

It looks like the situation won’t be easy for new owner Gerry Cardinale. AC Milan are working to extends Leao’s contract for two more years reveals Pellegatti. An agreement can be reached at 6 million plus bonuses.

At the same time the Rossoneri are making Leao a promise to let him go in the future if an offer of around €120 million arrives.

The Italian journalist believes that the 23-year-old is slowly outgrowing Serie A and will eventually join a Premier League squad. Besides PSG, the English clubs would have no problem to match the €120 million asking fee. If Jack Grealish (not a regular starter) and Alexander Isak (joined Newcastle) command important fees then Leao certainly deserves more.

Chelsea have already tried to snatch the Portugal international from AC Milan during the summer. With 3 goals and 3 assists in 6 matches, Rafael is looking to improve his numbers this season. If he continues with this pace the list of suitors will keep growing.
