Romagnoli set to sign for AC Milan rivals

AC Milan and Alessio Romagnoli will part ways at the end of the season but the captain will continue to player in Serie A.

The adventure of Alessio Romagnoli at San Siro is coming to an end after seven seasons with the Red and Blacks. The AC Milan captain will leave the club at the end of the season on a free transfer after failing to agree a new contract with the Rossoneri.

Alessio Romagnoli currently earns 6 million euros per season, bonuses included. AC Milan offered him a new five-year contract at half of that figure but the player has refused. His departure from the Rossoneri is not just an economic issue. The Italian defender has lost his status as a regular starter since the arrival of Fikayo Tomori.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old centre back will continue to play in Serie A. Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Alessio Romagnoli will join Lazio as a free agent once the season is over. The former Roma defender will return to the capitol but this time he will play for the eternal rivals. Romagnoli is a fan of Lazio since childhood.

Lazio have offered Romagnoli a long-term contract of €3.2 million per season according to Schira. That’s slightly more than AC Milan are offering him but Romagnoli has received guarantees that he will play a key role at Lazio under Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian centre back arrived at AC Milan in 2015 for a transfer fee of €25 million from Roma. He has made over 240 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals along the way. Romagnoli is about to become the fourth AC Milan player that leaves AC Milan on a free transfer in recent years after Donnarumma, Calhanoglu and Kessie.
