AC Milan can’t win Scudetto without fixing key problem

AC Milan are leading Serie A for the first time in many years but there is still something missing in order to challenge for the Scudetto.

After ten rounds of Serie A, AC Milan are leading the league with 26 points, 5 more than second placed Inter. With eight wins and two draws this is the second best start in the history of the Rossoneri.

Few could have expected such a positive start to the season even though in the second half of last season the team showed signs of revival. Nevertheless, Milan needs improvements in order to really challenge for the Scudetto.

The Rossoneri have a problem in defense. Simon Kjaer is the undisputed leader of the squad and Alessio Romagnoli the captain but the bench doesn’t offer quality alternatives. Matteo Musacchio was supposed to be sold in the summer until an ankle injury changed plans. The Argentine still hasn’t made a single appearances so far.

Leo Duarte has failed to make an impact since his arrival from Flamengo in 2019. The Brazilian defender has made just two substitute appearances this season for a total of 27 minutes. The only one to have contributed significantly this season is youngster Matteo Gabbia. However, Milan need much more than the 21-year-old.

In order to really aspire for the Scudetto AC Milan need a top centre back that can challenge Kjaer and Romagnoli for a starting spot. With the season long, and Milan playing in three competitions, a new quality defender is needed to substitute Kjaer and Romagnoli when they don’t play and eventually replace the Dane permanently.
