Sky claim Newcastle paid much lower fee than reported for Tonali

Newcastle may have ended up paying a much lower fee for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali than what initially reported.

AC Milan have completed the sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle. The transfer of the 23-year-old Italian central midfielder in the Premier League was considered a lighting out of the blue with no one expecting that AC Milan would deprive themselves of one of the best players in the squad so quickly.

Tonali will travel to England to formalize his transfer to Newcastle now that the EURO Under-21 has ended for his squad. Sandro was captaining the young Italy who couldn’t progress to the knockout stage. Nevertheless, the rumored record breaking transfer of Sandro Tonali may not be correct.

Sky Sport writes today that reports in Italy that the deal will cost Newcastle over €80 million are incorrect. Newcastle will in fact pay £55 million (around €64 million) for Tonali according to Sky Sport. The figure is significantly lower than what Italian media has claimed even if it does not take add-ons into consideration.

Losing Sandro Tonali is a big blow for the Rossoneri, especially considering that Ismael Bennacer is expected to fully recover at the beginning of 2024. The Italian midfielder made 130 appearances for the Red and Blacks in his three years at San Siro. He played a key role in winning the Scudetto and reaching the Champions League semi-final.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has joined AC Milan following the departure of Sandro Tonali. The Englishman will sign a five-year contract. The Rossoneri are looking on the market to bring in two other midfielders with Yunus Musa, Tijjani Reijnders and Sofyan Amrabat rumored as potential targets.
