Milan see Dortmund star as Fabregas alternative
Borussia Dortmund star Julian Weigl is the new name AC Milan are considering for the midfield. The player is on the market and at an affordable price.
We are in December and AC Milan sporting director Leonardo has intensified his work on the transfer market. So far, the Brazilian has completed the purchase of Lucas Paqueta for 35 million euros while the return of Zlataan Ibrahimovic is practically closed. Now, Leo needs to complete the defence (three centre backs injured) and midfielder where two players may arrive instead of one.
The midfield especially is of particular interest. The Rossoneri are in contacts with Stefano Sensi of Sassulo, Leandro Paredes of Zenit Saint Petersburg and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas. In two weeks UEFA will reveal the penalties that the club will face and only then Leonardo will have a precise budget to spend in January. In the meantime, Kicker, Germany’s leading sports magazine, reports that AC Milan are considering a move for Julian Weigl.
The 23 year old Borussia Dortmund star is one of the biggest talents in Germany but, with the arrival of new coach Lucien Favre, Weigl has lost his starting spot. The German international has found himself collateral damage to the great form of the first team. Favre promotes a high-tempo vertical game and prefers fast and strong physical players like Witsel and Delaney. Unhappy with the situation Julian Weigl is looking for a way out.
His peripheral role this season may convince Dortmund to let him go. A transfer seems logical on all parties but while Weigl may demand a January move Dortmund would happily negotiate in the summer.
AC Milan are joining a list of interested English clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. His former coach Thomas Tuchel, now at PSG, remains an admirer too but none of this clubs considers a January bid as a priority. Weigl himself would prefer a team that can guarantee him first minute football. The price tag of Julian has now fallen to 25 million euros, a figure well within the reach of AC Milan.
