AC Milan paying heavy price for two key mistakes

AC Milan have put the Scudetto race in danger with the recent draw proving how past mercato mistakes could be fatal.

The match between AC Milan and Bologna end in a goalless draw. AC Milan fail to keep the pace of Inter and Napoli. Despite 33 goal attempts the Rossoneri could not find the back of the need. Stefano Pioli’s squad continue to lead Serie A but with just one point of difference with Napoli.

A painful draw in such a crucial phase of the season. Pioli’s side must immediately turn the page and concentrate on the upcoming match against Torino. Nevertheless, AC Milan are now paying a heavy price for two mistakes made during the last two transfer windows.

Purely for economic reasons, Maldini and Massara were unable to sign a top level attacking midfielder and right winger. The Rossoneri preferred to gamble after the departure of Hakan Calhanoglu leaving Brahim Diaz as the only available attacking midfielder in Pioli’s squad. After a bright start, Diaz has been a shadow of his former self since the end of 2021.

The situation is similar on the right wing. Pioli was forced to take out Junior Messias after 45 minutes and enter Rebic. Different names but same outcome. Pioli’s decision to prefer Rebic, who is a left winger, rather than Alexis Saelemaekers and Samuel Castillejo, showcases the lack of quality on that flank.

The three right wingers have scored a total of seven goals so far. Extremely low numbers for a squad that aims to win the Scudetto. The attacking contribution of the trio has been underwhelming, as well as that of Brahim Diaz. The decision to not bring new faces in January could prove to be fatal at the end of the season.
