Milan revolution, switching to 3-5-2: here is the strategy

The latest moves in the transfer market suggest Milan are headed towards a tactical revolution for next season. From 4-3-3 to 3-5-2.

AC Milan started the 2016\17 season on a high note, near Christmas, the club won the Supercoppa Italia against Juventus and was second in the Serie A classification. A steep downfall followed. The rossoneri finished in sixth place but still managed to qualify for Europa League. Despite the ups and downs of a troubled season one thing never changed. Vincenzo Montella’s team played almost every match with the basic 4-3-3 formation.

So far, the rossoneri have been unstoppable in the summer transfer window. Five players have arrived till now and many are expected to follow soon. This moves are pushing manager Vincenzo Montella towards a tactical revolution for next season. It is very likely that his Milan will change face and play more often with the 3-5-2 formation, a tactical system that manager Montella tried to experiment in the last games of the past season. More and more concrete clues seem to lead to this direction, as the club is looking for various types of reinforcements except offensive wingers, so it almost seems that Milan can’t allow itself to deploy an attacking trio in front in the next season unless a change of strategy.

In addition, as Tuttosport writes, Milan is close to Andrea Conti (read here), a young attacking minded right back than can also play as right midfielder. The rossoneri have already signed Ricardo Rodriguez, a very similar defender who plays on the left and are chasing the Danish defender, Simon Kjaer of Fenerbahce, to populate even further the center back unit and to have at least five elements to safely cover the defense of three.

In conclusion everything seems to presage the use of this new formation, already used by Montella while he was manager of Fiorentina and Sampdoria. In the first summer friendly match we will be able to understand better what the managers final decision will be.
