Three URGENT changes Giampaolo must make to the starting eleven

After the derby defeat, coach Giampaolo should urgently consider to make at least three changes to AC Milan’s starting eleven.

Brozovic’s deflected strike and Lukaku’s header were enough for Inter to win another derby. A difficult result to accept but certainly one that reflected the performances on both teams on the pitch. Still, it’s just the fourth round of Serie A and, despite the challenging start to the season, AC Milan must not fall victims to depression.

The derby defeat should serve as a wake-up call. Not everything should be thrown away. Instead, coach Marco Giampaolo should restart from the positive aspects of the derby. Contrary to Giampaolo’s belief, the new signings are ready and should urgently be seen more from the first minute starting with the next match against Torino.

Changes should happen in every department starting with the defence. In just 20 minutes against Inter, Theo Hernandez showed that he’s more compact in defence and dangerous in attack than Ricardo Rodriguez. The Swiss left-back was underwhelming to say the lest. It’s time for the former Real Madrid to replace him in the starting eleven.

Another urgent modification should take place in midfield. Summer signing Ismael Bennacer should take Biglia’s spot. The great player that dictated the tempo of the game has remained at Lazio. In his three years at San Siro, Biglia has been just a shadow of his former self. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that AC Milan’s best display in Serie A was against Brescia with Bennacer commanding the play.

The last adjustment should be in attack. Giampaolo has wasted a lot of time trying to figure out which between Suso, Paqueta and Castillejo should play as trequartista and which partner Piatek in attack. The derby clearly answered the second question. Rafael Leao is a first team player. The youngest and least expert footballer on the pitch seemed like he was the only Milan player trying to do something. Fast, skilled in dribbling and a good passer, he’s a luxury Giampaolo can’t afford to keep on the bench. Rebic too deserves more consideration.
